Established in 1978, the Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP) has grown to become one of India's leading centers for mental health care, research, and training. Located in Jharkhand, we serve a diverse population with a commitment to evidence-based practice and holistic patient care.
Our mission is to alleviate suffering from mental illness through comprehensive treatment, advance the field of psychiatry through innovative research, and promote mental health awareness in the community. We envision a society where mental health is prioritized and stigma is eliminated.
The institute spans over 50 acres with state-of-the-art facilities including inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, specialized therapy units, and research laboratories. Our multidisciplinary team of over 200 professionals works collaboratively to provide personalized care for conditions ranging from depression and anxiety to severe psychotic disorders.
CIP is recognized by the National Board of Examinations for postgraduate training in psychiatry and clinical psychology. We collaborate with international organizations like the World Health Organization and maintain academic partnerships with universities worldwide.
Our community outreach programs extend mental health services to rural areas of Jharkhand, conducting regular camps, school mental health programs, and training for primary care physicians. Annually, we treat over 25,000 outpatients and admit approximately 1,500 inpatients, maintaining a recovery rate above 85% for most common disorders.

Comprehensive assessment and treatment for depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, OCD, PTSD, and other mental health conditions affecting adults. Our approach combines pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and lifestyle interventions tailored to individual needs.
Specialized care for developmental disorders, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, behavioral issues, and emotional problems in children and teenagers. Family therapy and school collaboration are integral components of our treatment plans.
Integrated treatment for substance use disorders including alcohol, opioids, tobacco, and other drugs. Our program includes detoxification, rehabilitation, relapse prevention, and family support. We employ motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and maintenance pharmacotherapy.
Psychological assessment and evidence-based psychotherapies including CBT, DBT, psychodynamic therapy, and mindfulness-based interventions. We provide individual, couple, family, and group therapy sessions. Neuropsychological testing for cognitive assessment is available.
Advanced biological treatments including electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), and pharmacogenetic testing. Our neuromodulation unit is equipped with the latest technology for treatment-resistant depression and other severe conditions.

Central Institute of Psychiatry maintains an active research program with over 50 ongoing projects across various domains of mental health. Our research endeavors are funded by national bodies like the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Science & Technology, and international collaborations.
Current research focuses include: genetic studies of psychiatric disorders, neuroimaging biomarkers, novel pharmacotherapies, digital mental health interventions, cultural aspects of mental illness, and health services research. Our researchers have published extensively in peer-reviewed journals such as The Lancet Psychiatry, JAMA Psychiatry, and Indian Journal of Psychiatry.
The institute hosts an annual national conference on mental health that attracts over 500 delegates. We also conduct regular workshops and training programs for mental health professionals from across India. Our library houses more than 10,000 volumes and provides access to major psychiatric databases.
Recent groundbreaking research from CIP includes a community-based study on depression prevalence in rural Jharkhand (published 2022), a clinical trial on novel augmentation strategies for treatment-resistant depression (2023), and development of a mobile app for relapse prevention in schizophrenia (2024).
Our neuroimaging facility with 3T MRI and EEG capabilities supports cutting-edge neuroscience research. The pharmacogenetics lab enables personalized medication selection based on genetic profiling. CIP collaborates with premier institutions including the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and several international universities.
